A Partial Knee Replacement

What are the advantages of a partial knee replacement?

A partial knee replacement often leads to a quicker recovery following surgery and a faster return to activities, when compared to a total knee replacement. In addition, patients often report better function and a more "natural feeling" knee after a partial knee.

What are the disadvantages of a partial knee replacement?

Not all knee replacements last for ever and there may be a higher chance of having to have your knee changes or revised sooner with a partial knee, when compared to a total knee replacement. However for most patients, if suitable, the benefits of a partial knee outweigh the disadvantages.

What is a partial knee replacement?

A partial knee replacement is an operation where only part or one compartment of the knee is resurfaced with metal and plastic implants.

Who can have a partial knee replacement?

People who have osteoarthritis affecting just one compartment of the knee may be suitable for a partial knee replacement. Approximately 30-40% of patients may be a candidate for a partial knee replacement. The most common partial knee replacement is a "medial compartment" knee replacement, where someone would have osteoarthritis affecting the inner (medial) side of the knee.
